Description

This easy salt dough recipe is perfect for homemade ornaments, handprint keepsakes, and kid-friendly crafts using just flour, salt, and water.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup fine salt
  • 3/4 to 1 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Slowly add warm water, stirring with a spoon until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 to 7 minutes, until smooth and firm.
  4. Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters or a knife.
  5. If making ornaments, use a straw to poke a small hole near the top.
  6. To dry: bake at 200°F for 2 to 3 hours (turning once) or air dry at room temperature for 1 to 2 days.

Notes

Add food coloring to the water for tinted dough or paint finished pieces with acrylics after drying. Store leftover dough wrapped in plastic for up to 24 hours.
