These soft, glazed Italian anise cookies are a cherished family favorite, bringing a sweet licorice touch to your holiday or everyday baking.

- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons anise extract (or 1 teaspoon anise and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- A pinch of salt
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 3 tablespoons milk (or more for desired consistency)
- 1 teaspoon anise extract (for glaze)
- Optional: Nonpareils or colorful sprinkles for decoration
Instructions
- Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until smooth and fluffy (2–3 minutes).
- Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Add anise extract and stir until combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture until soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
- Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Shape dough into 1-tbsp balls or figure-eights and place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until bottoms are golden and tops are pale.
- Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack.
- Whisk confectioners’ sugar, milk, and anise extract to make glaze.
- Dip cookie tops into glaze, sprinkle with nonpareils, and let set for 30 minutes.
Notes
Chill dough to prevent spreading. Customize flavor with almond or lemon extract. Work in small batches for best sprinkle adherence.
